Food is a wonderful way to find simple pleasures in daily life even amidst those times of unpredictable chaos. Especially when that food comes in the form of sweet treats. Busy summer day of fun outdoor activities? Relax and cool off with some of your favorite ice cream. Chaotic winter day of last minute holiday shopping and gift- wrapping? Warm up with a nice big slice of pie! It seems like no matter what time of year, sugary sweets are always there to rejuvenate us and pep us back up. Especially if those sweets happen to be topped with some delectable Homemade Whipped Cream!
Now, I know what you may be thinking right now. “What?! Homemade whipped cream? Is that even a thing?“ Yes, it is! It is a delightfully delicious thing that is so easy to make and turns out so yummy that it’ll be really hard to go back to the store- bought stuff. And the treats or desserts that you can spruce up with this homemade topping are endless! All you need is the right equipment, a few creamy ingredients, and just a couple of minutes to whip up this classic dessert topping.
To make easy homemade whipped cream all you need is some heavy whipping cream, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar. Just beat all of the ingredients together in a mixing bowl for 2 – 3 minutes. Then, transfer the whipped cream to a pastry piping bag, tie it off, and it’s ready to serve or be piped onto a dessert.
Equipment for Homemade Whipped Cream
This whipped cream recipe is delightfully easy and does not require a lot of tools or equipment to whip together. You mainly just need a few common kitchen tools for this recipe to go smoothly.
- Hand mixer with a whisk attachment
- Glass mixing bowl
- Piping bags
- Piping bag ties
- Cupcake jumbo Piping tips
- Spatulas
Creamy Ingredients
We’re off to a wonderfully simple start! Now, we only need to round up 3 simple ingredients and then we can move on to whipping up this yummy treat!
- 2 cups Heavy Whipping Cream– cold
- Whipping cream whips better and holds its shape for longer when it remains cold.
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup powdered sugar
- Using powdered sugar instead of granulated sugar helps not only the final texture of the whipped cream, but also helps stabilize it so it can be safely stored for a few days.
Flavorful Tip:
You can substitute the vanilla extract for other extracts such as peppermint, strawberry, lemon, mint, or almond to easily mix and match flavors with any homemade dessert you want to make!
How to Make Homemade Whipped Cream
Ready for a fun and simple recipe process? This one goes so smoothly that it can actually be somewhat relaxing to whip this stuff up!
Preparation Tip:
To help the whipped cream remain cold throughout the beating process, you can chill your mixing bowl and whisk attachment in the refrigerator for about 15 – 30 minutes before you’re ready to begin whipping up this recipe.
- First, gather up and measure out all of your whipped cream ingredients.
- Then, pour all of the ingredients into a glass mixing bowl.
- Next, beat the creamy mixture for 2 – 3 minutes using an electric hand mixer with a whisk attachment. Start on a low speed and gradually bump up to a higher speed.
- Occasionally pause mixing to scrape the whipped cream mixture down from the sides of the bowl.
- The whipped cream is ready when soft peaks form on the tip of the whisk attachment.
- Next, prepare a pastry piping bag with a jumbo piping tip.
- Then, use a spatula to transfer the whipped cream to the prepared piping bag and close off the piping bag with a bag tie.
- Finally, squeeze your homemade whipped cream into a serving dish and serve immediately or pipe onto a completely cooled homemade dessert.
Storing Homemade Whipped Cream
If you use an ingredient that also acts as a stabilizer in a homemade whipped cream recipe, the powdered sugar in this case, then you can actually store this homemade treat safely for a short while.
- Transfer the whipped cream to an airtight container and refrigerate.
- This homemade whipped cream lasts for 2 to 4 days in the refrigerator.
- When there’s so much moisture in the bottom of the container that the remaining whipped cream kind of floats, it’s time to toss it out.
- If piped onto a homemade dessert, then the whipped cream will stay good for about as long as the dessert, depending on how you store it.
- To store some of this homemade whipped cream in the freezer, just pipe mounds or swirls of it onto a parchment- lined baking sheet and freeze flat overnight.
- The following day, just peel off the frozen whipped cream swirls and transfer them to a freezer- safe ziploc bag or an airtight container.
- These will stay good frozen for up to 3 months.
- Frozen whipped cream clouds are perfect for cooling down hot chocolate!
- Always mark the date on the outside of the container or bag to keep up with freshness.
