If you like to get busy baking in the kitchen then you have probably tried out at least one recipe that calls for using mashed bananas. Mashing bananas seems like a simple enough task, and it is, but there are always new things (or methods) to learn about that can simplify the whole process for you!

Let me start by saying that there is no right or wrong way to mash bananas, it all just depends on what is more convenient for you and what tools you have on hand. Today I’m breaking down 3 simple mashing methods using a simple fork, a potato masher, or even a hand mixer to get perfectly mashed bananas!

There is one thing that you need to keep in mind though. To get the right consistency and flavor, you absolutely need to use an overripe banana. Yes, the ones with black spots. Otherwise, not only will the banana be hard to mash, but it will also taste bitter. An overripe banana has a much sweeter taste which is why it’s used in baked goods and pastry recipes.

As long as you use an overripe banana everything else should be smooth sailing. So grab your bananas and kitchen tools and let’s get to mashing! Here’s my simple breakdown of these 3 Ways to Mash Bananas!

How to Mash Bananas with a Hand Mixer

And finally, the hand mixer mashing method. This method is particularly easy on your hands when it comes to mashing bananas. If you have trouble with wrist pain or just need a method that doesn’t require as much work on your hands, this is the perfect method for you! It can also be a bit quicker (and messier) but works wonderfully! Here’s what to use and how to mash bananas with a hand mixer:

How to Mash Bananas with a Potato Masher (My Favorite)

Now let me go over my personal preferred method for mashing bananas, using the potato masher! This method is my favorite because it requires less effort than using a fork and does a better job mashing overall, but is still easier to clean up than the hand mixer set-up. Here’s what to use and how to mash bananas with a potato masher:

How to Mash Bananas with a Fork

First, let’s go over the most simple mashing method, using a fork. This is perfect for literally anyone since it only requires a couple of basic kitchen utensils! There’s not much to it, so let’s dive right in. Here’s what to use and how to mash bananas with a fork:

    Storing Mashed Bananas

To store mashed bananas: transfer the mashed bananas to an airtight container and secure plastic food wrap tightly to the surface of the bananas. They can be stored like this in the fridge for 2-3 days. To freeze mashed bananas: transfer the bananas to an airtight ziploc bag and freeze for up to 3 months. Always label the date on the outside of the container to keep up with freshness.
