When it comes to the cold winter months, my favorite way to warm up is with some soothing and satisfying soup! Homemade soups are great for so many reasons. They’re usually pretty easy to throw together, you can mix in lots of complimentary flavors, and they’re literally the perfect comfort food!
One of my favorite soup recipes to warm up with is one that I enjoyed growing up with in Russia, scrumptious Split Pea Soup! This Russian soup is incredibly easy to make and packed full of hearty ingredients like ham, potatoes, and other veggies to help you beat the winter cold.

To make split pea soup, all you need is: olive oil, onion, garlic, carrots, chicken broth, ham, dried split peas, potatoes, seasonings, a dutch oven, and a wooden spoon. First, prepare and measure out all ingredients. Then, preheat the dutch oven over medium heat on the stovetop. Heat up the oil slightly, then add the garlic and onion to saute. Then add in the carrots and chicken broth. Add in the remaining ingredients and bring the soup to a boil. Let the soup simmer for 90 minutes, then serve with parsley and croutons.

To store homemade split pea soup: transfer the soup into an airtight container. Store in the fridge for up to 1 week. To freeze split pea soup: transfer the soup to a freezer-safe Ziploc bag.
