How to Decorate A Unicorn Pumpkin

One of the best parts of Halloween is carving pumpkins, but since my daughter prefers everything to be unicorn-related, we instead made our pumpkins into unicorns. Making a unicorn pumpkin is a very simple process, and is an excellent kid’s activity for a more creative and different Halloween. To do this, you will need the following:

Supplies
White, Black, and Pink Acrylic Paint
White Modeling Clay, two 4 oz packages
Optional: Kids Painting Aprons
First, start with the pumpkin. Any pumpkin will work fine, but you can also buy a craft pumpkin that won’t get old and rot and will be easier to decorate and work with. I actually prefer using a craft pumpkin, as they are much lighter and easier to work with. Especially when working with kids, a craft pumpkin is much better instead of a real pumpkin. Instead of painting your pumpkin, you can also get a pumpkin that is already perfectly white. Painting the pumpkin is best done with acrylic paint, so you’ll have to do multiple layers. I preferred to paint the pumpkin by halves, so I can paint one half while letting the other half dry. Multiple layers can take a couple of hours to dry.

While you’re waiting for the paint to dry, you can start modeling the features that you want on your pumpkin. I used Crayola air-dry clay for the ears and horns, but the air-dry clay takes a couple of hours to dry, so I’d recommend using normal modeling clay that will dry much faster. The nice thing about using modeling clay is that you can make whatever features you want. After drying, you can also paint the clay whatever color you want, so you can paint your horn a metallic gold or silver, or just keep it white. After making and painting the clay parts, you can use a hot glue gun to fix them onto your pumpkin.
Lastly, if you want your unicorn to be wearing flowers, I suggest using silk flowers. Since the flowers have metal wires inside of them, you’ll have to cut the stem off using a pair of wire clippers. After cutting the flowers, glue them onto the pumpkin with hot glue in whatever kind of arrangement you want.

After everything is dried, you’ll want to paint the face of your unicorn. This can be done with a black sharpie, and you can draw whatever you’d like onto your pumpkin, for example, a nose or eyelashes. This could also be done with black paint and a thin brush, but this also takes some time to dry.
Making a unicorn pumpkin was a fun activity that I could enjoy with my daughter, and the photoshoot was also very fun and simple. I like these unicorn pumpkins because they are so easy to customize, and you can really have any color or face on the unicorn. Even if it isn’t Halloween time, you can make these unicorns for a fun decoration at a unicorn-themed party.
