How to easily cook boba pearls for smoothies, bubble tea, and more!

If you’re keeping up with trendy foods and drinks then you probably already know all about boba pearls, aka tapioca pearls! You’ve probably seen these tasty little gems featured in bubble teas, smoothies, or even served on top of a tasty dessert.
Now even though you typically only see these bubbly boba treats out and about at restaurants and cafes, you can actually prepare them right in your own kitchen! They’re super easy to cook and prepare, plus when you make them at home you can use them for experimenting with all kinds of other homemade recipes!
While boba pearls are most commonly known for bubble tea, I love to prepare them for scrumptious homemade smoothies! But the options with these tasty tapioca pearls are endless! You can add them to sparkling drinks -not just tea-, cupcakes, or even spoon some on top of cinnamon rolls for a fun and flavorful breakfast.

To easily cook boba pearls, all you need is: uncooked boba pearls, water, brown sugar, a strainer, and a cooking pot. First, bring the water to a boil in the pot. Add the boba pearls and cook for 15 minutes while stirring to keep them from sticking together. Then, turn the heat off, close the lid, and let the boba pearls steep for another 15 minutes. Thoroughly drain and rinse the boba pearls. Pour the cooked boba into a clean mixing bowl and add the brown sugar. Mix the ingredients together completely and serve!

- 1 cup Boba pearls– uncooked
- 3 cups water
- ¼ cup brown sugar
How to Cook Boba Pearls
Drum roll, please! It’s time for the really fun part: cooking up these bubbly boba bits! As promised, this process is super simple and easy to follow along with so even beginners should be able to have fun with this one. Here’s how to cook boba pearls:
- First, measure out the boba pearl ingredients with the measuring cup.
- Next, pour the water into a 6-quart cooking pot.
- Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
- Then, once the water is boiling, add in the uncooked boba pearls.
- Reduce the heat to medium and cook the boba pearls for 15 minutes while stirring continuously to keep the pearls from sticking together.
- Next, turn the heat off completely, secure the lid, and let the boba pearls steep for another 15 minutes.
- After steeping, drain and rinse the boba pearls through a fine mesh strainer.
- Then, transfer the boba to a clean mixing bowl.
- Next, add in the brown sugar.
- Mix the sugar in with the boba pearls until they’re completely combined.
- Finally, these boba pearls are ready to be served however you please!
Boba Pearl Serving and Storage
Do not store cooked boba pearls in the refrigerator or freezer! These boba pearls should be used/eaten within 8-10 hours of being cooked. They should be kept at room temperature or even a bit warmer, if possible.
