For those of us who just love bread and all its deliciousness, almost nothing is better than fresh, warm, homemade bread! Especially if it can be ready before dinner. How about a simple bread recipe that gives you all that, plus you don’t even have to preheat the oven? Sounds phenomenal, right?!

It is pretty great, I must say! My recipe for these scrumptious Skillet Flatbreads is so simple, even beginners can follow along easily for delicious bread results. I’m sure your family will love these tasty treats just as much as mine does! My daughter loves it when I make these for snack time or playdates.

These delectable skillet flatbreads are perfect to serve with your favorite sweet or savory spread, served as a stuffed wrap or gyro, or just topped with almost any of your favorite foods! These can be customized to serve for breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and, of course, snack time.

Basically, these warm and cozy skillet flatbreads are so versatile, you can serve them however you want to! Ready to get started? Here’s how I make scrumptious Skillet Flatbread!

    Simple Skillet Equipment

First, let me go over the tools and equipment I use for this scrumptious skillet bread recipe. I don’t need a whole lot, just these few common kitchen tools:

    • Measuring spoons
    • Measuring Cup
    • Wooden spoon
    • Plastic wrap
    • Cast iron skillet
    • Glass mixing bowl
    • French rolling pin

    Skillet Flatbread Ingredients

Now, let’s talk about ingredients. This simple skillet bread recipe only requires 6 sweet and simple ingredients, most of which you probably already have in your kitchen. Here’s what I use to make skillet flatbreads:

    • 1 ½ cup warm water, temps at 80°F
    • 1 tbsp Maple syrup
    • 2 tsp Active Dry Yeast
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 4 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 ½ tbsp Canola oil

    How to Make Skillet Flatbread

Now it’s skillet bread showtime! This flatbread process is super simple and easy to follow but the dough will have to sit for a while during prep, so take that into consideration for any time crunches you run into. Other than that, let’s get right to it! Here’s how I make simple and scrumptious skillet flatbread:

    1. First, use the measuring cup and spoons to measure out all of the flatbread ingredients.
    2. Next, in a glass mixing bowl, mix the warm water with the yeast and maple syrup. Allow the mixture to sit for 10 minutes to activate.
      1. You should see a foam form on the surface of the water.
    3. Then, add in the flour and begin to mix using your hands or a wooden spoon. Once slightly mixed, begin to slowly add the canola oil a little at a time as you knead the dough. The dough will be loose and the stickiness will decrease as you add in the oil. Once your dough is ready, form it into a ball, cover it with plastic wrap, then with a kitchen towel. Set it aside and allow it to rest for at least 30 minutes.
    4. Then, cut the flatbread dough into 8 equal portions.
    5. Roll each portion into a ball and lightly coat each one with flour by rolling it on a lightly floured surface.
    6. Use the rolling pin to roll each portion out flat, in a rough circle or oval shape. The dough portions should roll out to about ¼ inch thick.
    7. Then, preheat a skillet on high heat. Once hot, lower the heat to medium or low heat.
    8. Then, one at a time, place the flatbreads in the hot skillet for 2 to 3 minutes, or until golden brown on one side.
    9. Flip and fry on the second side for another 2 minutes.
    10. Repeat for the remaining dough portions.
    11. Finally, remove the cooked flatbread from the skillet and wrap the cooked bread in a kitchen towel to keep warm until it’s time to serve. Enjoy!

    Storing Homemade Flatbread

Like with most other homemade bread recipes, these flatbreads are best enjoyed the same day they are made, but they can be stored for up to 3 days at room temperature. For longer storage, you can transfer them to a Ziploc bag or airtight container, and freeze for up to 3 months. Always make sure to label the date on the outside of the container to keep up with freshness.

To reheat flatbread there are a few options: heat for a couple minutes on each side in a preheated skillet; warm it in the microwave for 15-20 seconds; or in a warm oven for 5 to 10 minutes.

Leftover flatbread dough can be covered tightly and stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
