With the COVID-19 quarantine, I’ve found an abundance of two things: time with family and toilet paper. With a bit of creativity and time, you can turn all those empty toilet paper rolls into cute unicorn-themed characters, with only a couple of supplies.
As with many mothers, I understand how hard it is to find things to do with your children that is fun and captivating during the COVID lockdown, especially while many children can’t attend school to socialize and learn. One way that I’ve found to help with this is by using arts and crafts as a daily activity to bond with your child and stimulate their brain in ways that would require school art classes.
This is also an excellent time to bond with your children, which is sometimes hard to find between your job and housework, and your child’s school, activities, and sports. With my daughter, we’ve picked up many different crafts to make including unicorn and mermaid pumpkins, which are fun, simple, and allow you and your child’s creative side to make something together.
My daughter absolutely loves any time that she can spend in the studio with me. Such as making arts and crafts together, or cooking up some sweet treats such as Valentine’s Day cookies, or having a Gingerbread House decorating party. I always find a way for my daughter to be involved in any work that involves bright colors or lots of sugary treats.

Unicorn Theme
How To Make:
- First, clean off the toilet paper rolls of any excess glue and toilet paper.
- With the acrylic paint, paint the tubes any color that you want your unicorn to be.
- After the paint dries, paint on some eyes for the unicorn with black paint.
- Paint on blush with pink paint.
- Cut some ears out of construction paper.
- Cut out a horn from the glitter cardstock, as well as a crown from a different color of glitter cardstock.
- Prepare several layers of colored tissue paper on top of each other to cut for the mane and tail. Cut several 6-inch long strips ½ an inch wide of each color.
- Cut off 2 inches of the 6-inch strip, and fan them out and staple them. Do this again for the remaining 4 inches.
- Staple the ‘mane’ to the unicorn.
- Glue the ears and crown to the inside of the unicorn, behind the mane.
This craft is super easy and fast to do, and you can make hundreds of different characters. With different colors of yarn, paper, horns, and different faces, you can make whatever comes to your mind. This is a fun activity for kids to do with their parents, or can be done at kid’s parties as a group activity- see how many different unicorns a big group of kids will make!
My daughter has had many unicorn-themed crafts in the past, even asking for a unicorn-themed birthday party with a unicorn cake, and unicorn cookies– it’s safe to say that these unicorn crafts will stay as a decoration in the house for a long time.
When doing arts and crafts, I think that really let your creativeness show is very important. For your child, being creative stimulates and develops parts of the brain that is very important for a healthy child, and can even help your brain get some exercise in creativity. Even though I always present my arts and crafts through photography and videography, deviation from these is expected and encouraged. If you or your child want to do something different, add something new, or try something crazy, that’s all part of creativity! Creativity is even something that I employ in my cooking, too. In order to find the best-tasting and simplest recipes, I always have to find ways to make the recipe as best as it can be. For example, when making homemade lollipops, I ran into many issues that I just could not get past without a little creativity. Figuring out the best way to cook and cool candy, store the lollipops, and even getting the right colors was all a creative process that took a lot of effort. Doing arts and crafts is a perfect way to work out your creative skills. These skills will always help your ability to cook the best meals you can.
