To me there’s no better way to celebrate the 4th of July than with my friends and family, surrounded by scrumptious snacks and tasty treats! Especially treats like these patriotic Red, White, and Blue Chocolate Covered Pretzel Twists!
These tasty snacks start with simply covering sourdough pretzels in white chocolate. Then they’re drizzled in red chocolate, dipped in blue chocolate, and finally finished off with star sprinkles! I mean how could you get a more perfect and patriotic snack than that?
These are literally covered in those star-spangled American flag vibes. Plus these chocolate-covered pretzels are so good, they’re almost impossible to stop eating! Ready to celebrate the 4th of July in the most delicious way? Here’s how to make these Red, White, and Blue Chocolate Covered Pretzel Twists.
Chocolate Pretzel Equipment
Let’s start with the candied pretzel equipment! This is an easy recipe to follow along with but it does require quite a few tools to get the job done easily. Here are all the tools and utensils I use to make my patriotic pretzels:
- Measuring Cup The measuring cup is used to accurately measure larger quantities of ingredients like the candy melts. Precise measurements ensure that you have enough coating for all your pretzels and that the consistency will be correct.
- Measuring spoons Measuring spoons are used for smaller, more precise measurements of ingredients like coconut oil. Getting the right amount helps achieve the desired texture and fluidity in your melted candy.
- 1 Wilton candy melts pot This specialized pot is designed for melting candy melts or chocolate. It provides even heat distribution, making it easier to achieve a smooth, lump-free melted chocolate. This is crucial for achieving a smooth coating on your pretzels.
- Dual Melting Pot Insert This insert allows you to melt two different colors or types of candy at the same time in the same pot. This is particularly useful for this recipe, as you need both red and blue candy melts melted simultaneously.
- Spatulas Spatulas are used for stirring the melting candy and ensuring that it mixes evenly with the coconut oil. It’s also helpful for scraping down the sides of the pot to incorporate all the candy.
- 3 Baking sheet Baking sheets are used for laying out the pretzels after they’ve been coated in chocolate. Having multiple sheets allows you to work in batches and also segregate pretzels based on their stage in the decoration process.
- 4 Parchment paper sheets Parchment paper is used to line the baking sheets, ensuring that the chocolate-covered pretzels don’t stick to the surface. This makes for easy removal and less mess.
- Candy thermometer A candy thermometer is used to check the temperature of the melted chocolate. The ideal temperature (113°F in this case) ensures the coating will be smooth and will adhere well to the pretzels.
- Candy Dipping Tools Set or fork. These specialized tools or a simple fork are used for dipping the pretzels into the melted candy, making it easier to get an even coating. They also help you remove the pretzel from the candy while allowing any excess to drip off.
- Saucier Drizzle Spoon or spoon. This tool is used for drizzling the red and blue candy melts over the white chocolate-covered pretzels. The design of a saucier spoon, or even a regular spoon, allows for more controlled drizzling, making your pretzels look professionally done.
Star-Spangled Ingredients
Now the ingredients list is short, simple, and certainly sweet! I just love it when such a tasty and charming treat only requires a few ingredients! Here’s what I use to make my red, white, and blue chocolate-covered pretzels:
Pretzel Twists
- 24 Sourdough Pretzels medium size. Choose whole-grain pretzels or gluten-free pretzels made from ingredients like almond or chickpea flour for a higher fiber and protein content.
- 2 cup Bright white Wilton Candy Melts Substitute with 2 cups of white chocolate chips made from cacao butter and sweetened with stevia or monk fruit. Alternatively, use coconut butter mixed with a natural sweetener for a dairy-free option.
- 1 tbsp coconut oil Coconut oil is already considered a healthier fat, but if you want an alternative, you could use avocado oil, which has a neutral flavor and is rich in monounsaturated fats.
- 1 cup Royal Blue Wilton Candy Melts Use 1 cup of dark chocolate (preferably 70% cacao or higher) mixed with a few drops of natural blue food coloring. Dark chocolate is lower in sugar and higher in antioxidants.
- 1 tsp coconut oil Again, you could use avocado oil or even a bit of unsweetened almond milk to help achieve the desired consistency in your melted chocolate.
- 1 cup Red Wilton Candy Melts Substitute with 1 cup of dark chocolate and natural red food coloring. Just like the blue candy melts, dark chocolate is a healthier option.
- 1 tsp coconut oil Similar to the blue candy melts, you can use avocado oil or a small amount of unsweetened almond milk for a different consistency.
- Star Sprinkles Opt for homemade sprinkles made from coconut flakes colored with natural food dye, or use chia seeds or hemp seeds for a nutrient boost. Another option is to find store-bought sprinkles that are colored with natural food dyes and are free from artificial additives.

- Then, line a baking sheet with a parchment paper sheet, or wax paper, and set out the pretzel twists, white chocolate, and dipping tools.
- Next, start dipping the pretzel twists into the white chocolate, making sure each pretzel is completely covered.
- Use a fork or dipping tool to scoop the dipped pretzels out and let the excess chocolate drip off from each pretzel.
- After the pretzels are covered, spread the dipped pretzels over the lined baking sheet then refrigerate them for 10 minutes.
- Meanwhile, prepare the melting pot with the dual liner insert. Add the royal blue candy melts and 1 tsp. coconut oil to one side, and add the red candy melts and 1 tsp. coconut oil in the other.

Alternative Chocolate-Melting Method
If you don’t have a nifty candy melting pot in your kitchen collection, here is a simple microwave melting method that will work for anyone!
How to Melt Candy Melts in the Microwave:
- First, pour the candy melts into a heat-safe bowl or silicone measuring cup.
- Then, heat the candy melts in the microwave at 50% power, or on a defrost setting, for 1 minute.
- Next, stir the candies thoroughly.
- Use a towel or an oven mitt to protect your hand from the heat when handling the bowl or cup.
- Then, continue to microwave the candies at the same low setting in 15-30 second intervals, stirring in between each interval, until the candy is almost melted.
- Finally, let the candy sit for about 1 minute to let the residual heat take care of any small unmelted pieces of candy leftover.
- If you try another interval of cooking at this point, the candy could overcook and burn so it’s better to let the candy sit and take care of itself.

Chocolate Covered Pretzel Storage
To store chocolate-covered pretzels: transfer the pretzels to a large Ziploc bag or an airtight container. Separate the layers with a sheet of parchment or wax paper to keep the pretzels from sticking together. Label the date on the outside of the container. Store at room temperature or slightly cooler for up to 2- 3 weeks. Do not store these long-term in the fridge or the freezer due to the pretzels softening or going stale from moisture.
