I get so excited when it comes to planning out parties for holidays and events, but especially for Halloween! From baking batches of festive treats to picking out perfect party decor, I love putting attention into all of the details both big and small. One of the biggest factors to having Halloween party success is by setting up the perfect party food table!
No matter what holiday or party theme I’m working with there are some simple steps that I follow to ensure I create an eye-catching wow factor every time. By following these steps, my party table is sure to capture my guests’ attention and leave them with a sense of enchantment. That is exactly what Halloween is all about!
The perfect food table set-up starts with the perfect Halloween party table decoration ideas. To share some of this Halloween magic, I’m divulging some of my favorite decoration ideas and the steps I follow to make sure my guests are fully mesmerized every Halloween. I have quite a few ideas to go over so let’s get started!
Start with a Halloween Party Theme
First thing’s first: picking a party theme. I like to start my party-planning by picking out a Halloween theme. By doing this first, it makes the planning part so much easier when it comes to picking out my party table layout, decorations, and recipes. I’ve tried out several themes from spooky Halloween monsters to candy apple spook-taculars and never had a dull moment planning any of them!
Possible Party Themes:
- Spooky Creatures – bats, owls, spiders
- Halloween Creeps- ghosts, jack o’ lanterns, skeletons
- Monsters- mummies, frankenstein’s monster, zombies
- Halloween Colors – black, orange, green, purple, with silver being a perfect accent color
- Fun pumpkin theme – light-hearted, colorful pumpkins
Set the Mood with a Haunting Backdrop
After picking a theme, the very next thing you want to start working on is the party table backdrop. This step is important for helping set the spooky or enchanting mood for the party! Adding a festive backdrop also helps with one other important factor which is adding height to your layout. But I’ll go over that more later.
Moody Backdrop Decor Ideas:
- Spider webs
- Spooky curtain, if available
- Halloween banner, or…
- In place of a banner, use hanging decorations such as: a string of skeletons or a string of Halloween lights.
How to Set Up for Spooky Success
The next step to Halloween party success is setting up the perfect spooky table layout. This is accomplished through several factors like having eye-pleasing food arrangements, Halloween-themed snacks, a perfectly-paired table cover or table decorations, and by using frightening fillers and effects. The goal is to fill in the party table as much as possible without overcrowding it.
Halloween Table Necessities:
- Include an enchanting effect: I like to use dry ice to make a bubbling cauldron that adds a nice spooky fog to my party table.
- Opt for Halloween-themed paper products for: plates, drink coasters, napkins, and straws.
- Instead of paper cups I usually opt for reusable plastic cups or mugs that fit my party theme.
- Consider using Halloween lights or candles to help set the mood.
- Use spooky serving tray and stands: I like to use black and silver for a classy style to my spooky set-up.
- Follow up with spooky serving utensils and cutlery.
- Fill in empty spaces with small Halloween decorations: plastic skulls, spiders, bats, pumpkins, mice, etc.
Add Height to Your Party Food Table
This next step is one that is very important but often overlooked: add different heights to your party table! Adding different levels of height to a party table is very important for creating that wow factor we talked about. If you’ve ever set up a food table that included everything you thought was needed but you still ended up with that feeling that something was missing, I can almost guarantee that it was a height problem.
The traditional flat buffet-style seems to be the immediate go-to, but that flat set-up doesn’t provoke the wow factor for your guests. Besides the smell of food, there’s nothing else to really draw in the guests’ attention at first glance. It is absolutely necessary to use multiple tiers of different heights to draw in the eyes of your party guests. This simple step alone can take a table of simple snacks and turn it into an enchanting eye-catcher for your partiers!
How to Add Height to a Party Food Table:
- Use a tall cake stand for your centerpiece.
- Include individual treat stands with differing heights to create multiple levels.
- Use different size jars or bowls for candy fillers and drink pitchers.
- Include Halloween decor fillers for final touches. You can do this easily with table signs or plastic Halloween props.
Create an Eye-Catching Centerpiece
Now, let’s talk about creating an eye-catching centerpiece. I always make a themed cake for the centerpiece at all of my parties. To me, a food table is just never complete without a stunning cake at the center of it. The same rule applies for my Halloween and costume parties, of course. I typically make a cake that really encompasses the Halloween theme I’m going for.
Some party hosts prefer to just set out several easy snack platters for more of a hassle-free set-up. I totally understand why, I just prefer to go all out to really create an enchanting experience for my guests. If you personally don’t want to feature a cake, just use a couple of big snack platters in its place. Just make sure to still use differing heights to create that eye-catching factor.
Surround the Table with Tantalizing Treats
After finding the perfect spot for the Halloween centerpiece, it’s time to surround it with spooky snacks! Of course, it’s best to have all of your homemade treats ready before setting up the table. I actually prefer to start on my recipes a few days before the party and just store the baked treats until I’m ready to set them out. I have found that by doing it this way, it saves me a ton of hassle and worry on the actual party day.
Setting Up a Snack Smorgasbord:
- Party-themed cookies: Halloween sugar cookies are easy to make and customize for any Halloween theme.
- Creepy cupcakes: I like to make tombstone and monster cupcakes depending on my theme.
- Delicious drinks: There are tons of easy ways to make simple spooky drinks, it’s highly worth it to go that extra step.
- Spooky snacks: I like to use common Halloween snacks mainly as just fillers for the party table. Filling a jar with candy corn, candy pumpkins, or chocolates gives an easy and simple Halloween flair without taking the focus from the homemade sweets.
Setting Up the Party Table
Once the backdrop is in place and the party foods are ready, it’s time to actually set the table. Instead of just sitting things out at random, there is a routine that I follow that produces a nice flow for the whole food table. Here is my process for setting up the perfect Halloween party table.
How to Set Up the Perfect Halloween Party Table:
- First, find the perfect spot for the Halloween centerpiece. In my case, that’s the halloween cake. Don’t forget the cake stand!
- Then, start surrounding the centerpiece with the other baked treats and drinks. Alternate filling in the table space with medium-size and small platters. This is also the time to figure out the perfect spot for the steaming cauldron.
- Next, fill in the empty spaces with utensils, cutlery, etc. When I need to use more space on the table, I like to set out a few extra treat stands to display individual cupcakes, candy apples, or extra decorations.
- Finish filling in the table with jars of Halloween candy and add the final touches of decor to the table such as plastic spiders, skulls, bats, or mini pumpkins.
