Lemon Cupcakes with Lemon Filling

I’m one of those moms that just can’t resist going all out for birthday parties. I love all of the decorating, baking, and customizing that comes along with planning big birthday bashes! I pay attention to every detail from party-themed treats to the best party favor bags that anyone has ever seen!

But planning spectacular birthday parties can become really expensive really quick. Sometimes really great party favors can run up to $200-300… that’s just for 10 kid’s party favor bags! If you have more than 10 party guests then the costs will go even higher. Crazy, right?! Even though I like to go all-out I still have a budget to stick to and costs that high just don’t work for me when I know I can make my own party favor bags better and for cheaper!

When my daughter decided she wanted a unicorn-themed birthday party, I was all over it. I planned out enchanting unicorn treats and racked up on pink unicorn party decor. When it came to the party favor bags I knew right away that I wanted to do something totally unique but without having to break the bank to do it.

For enchanting party favor bags, I decided to do some customized party bags filled with DIY unicorn chocolate chip cookie baking kits! How cute, right?! Instead of a bunch of expensive yet cheaply-made toys and generic candy, I opted to send them home with an actual activity that ends with a sweet treat!

To do this, I sorted out individual bags of ingredients, made recipe cards, and even made some simple DIY Unicorn Party Bags to wrap it all up in and complete the unicorn theme to the fullest! It was really easy and surprisingly very affordable to make these party favor bags and I think they are just so much better than any other typical party favors!

If you’re looking for more affordable and unique ways to go all-out for your kiddo’s next big day then keep reading to see how I made these DIY Unicorn Birthday Party Favors! And to give you a better idea of what to expect on costs, here is a breakdown of what I spent on these DIY unicorn party favor bags, including everything for the DIY bags and the cookie kits:

So the one thing to keep in mind about these unicorn cookie kits is that the chocolate chips can be hard to find sometimes. I have seen them at Walmart, sometimes at local grocery stores, and on Amazon which is probably going to be your best bet if you can’t find them locally. They seem to be seasonal so I recommend starting your search as soon as possible if you want to make these cookie kits.

How to Make Unicorn Chocolate Chip Baking Kits for Party Favors

Now let me go over how easy it is to make these adorable little unicorn cookie kits! I can’t express just how much my daughter’s friends loved getting these kits to take home for later. Tip: I use a piping bag (with the tip cut 2 inches from the bottom) to carefully fill the bags with dry ingredients without spilling everything everywhere.

    1. First, print out individual bag labels for the dry ingredients on the round labels and the recipe instruction cards. You can print the recipe cards off at home on photo paper or you can have them printed at a local store, which is what I did.
      1. Keep in mind that the baking soda and salt will go in the same small bag so they will need to be on the same label.
    2. Then, place the individual labels on the reclosable bags. Label the 7×10 inch bags for flour, the 5.5×7.9 inch bags for the sugars, and the 3.5×5.5 inch bags for the baking soda and salt.
    3. Next, cut a 2-inch tip off of a piping bag.
    4. Pre-open all of the labeled reusable food bags.
    5. Then, use the piping bag as a funnel to carefully pour the ingredients into the bags as follows: (This recipe makes 10 kits, so there should be 10 each of the labeled ingredient bags)
      1. 2 ¾ cups of flour per individual flour bag.
      2. 1 tsp of baking soda + ½ tsp salt per each labeled soda/salt bag.
      3. 1 cup of brown sugar per each brown sugar bag.
      4. ½ cup granulated sugar per each gran. sugar bag.
      5. Remember to insert the tip of the piping bag into the opening of each bag to keep from spilling any ingredients on the lip of the bag. This will prevent it from getting an airtight seal later on.
    6. Repeat until all of the dry ingredients have been measured out into the appropriate reusable bags.
    7. Next, close each bag tightly and seal it with a Vacuum Sealer Machine.
    8. Finally, transfer one of each ingredient bag, along with a cookie dough scoop, a mini bag of unicorn chocolate chips, and a recipe card into each of the DIY unicorn party favor bags.

      2. Each cookie kit makes about 28 unicorn chocolate chip cookies.
