First, prepare and measure out all of the soup ingredients with a measuring cup and spoons. Preheat a dutch oven over medium heat on the stovetop.
Next, pour the oil into the dutch oven and let it heat up for 1 minute. Add in the chopped onion and minced garlic and saute while stirring regularly.
Then, add in the sliced carrots and saute until just tender.
Pour in the chicken broth.
Next, add the ham chunks, dried split peas, cubed potatoes, salt, and pepper into the pot.
Bring the soup mixture to a boil.
Then, cover the pot and let the soup simmer for 90 minutes while stirring occasionally.
Finally, serve this scrumptious split pea soup topped with fresh, chopped parsley and croutons.
